CRAIG Macindoe is the “mayor” of MuMu Grill, a Crows Nest steak restaurant.

Before him, somebody else was the “mayor”, but that person hadn’t come in to claim the free glass of Veuve Clicquot champagne the mayoralty earned him, so Mr Macindoe took the title.

Admittedly, for Mr Macindoe, being the “mayor” of MuMu is cheating slightly – he owns the place.

“But I didn’t have anyone take up the offer, so I’m the mayor now,” he said.

Confused? You obviously aren’t up with the latest and hottest social networking trend: Foursquare.

A step along from Facebook and Twitter, Foursquare is a relatively new concept that combines Twitter-like short website updates with GPS positioning systems.

Members use their Blackberries or iPhones to post their exact locations and receive tips and updates from other users about good places to eat, drink or visit near where they’ve “checked in”.

It also operates as a game – members who “check in” to certain places the most are crowned mayor of that place and can win prizes such as MuMu’s free glass of Veuve.

It might sound zany but an estimated 60,000 Sydneysiders are already registered, and the system is the hottest craze in New York, where a million people are members.

“I think it’s going to be absolutely huge here too soon,” Mr Macindoe said.

As well as being part of Foursquare, Mr Macindoe’s restaurant – which specialises in trendy sustainable beef
